Sir Hugh Michael Robertson, a British businessman and former politician, is perhaps best known for his prominent roles as the current Chair of the British Olympic Association and Birmingham Airport, as well as his tenure as the Chair of Camelot Group, operator of the National Lottery, from 2018 to 2023. Born on October 9, 1962, Robertson was educated at The King's School, Canterbury, before going on to read Land Management at the University of Reading from 1982 to 1985, where he earned a BSc Hons degree. He then attended the RMA Sandhurst between 1985 and 1986, setting the stage for his future military service.
Robertson served as an officer in the Life Guards from 1982 to 1995, rising to the rank of Major. During this time, he saw active service in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, the Gulf War, and served with the UN peacekeeping force UNPROFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1993, he commanded the Household Cavalry for the Queen's birthday parade at the state opening of Parliament.
After leaving the military, Robertson transitioned to the world of finance, working as a banker with the investment management division of Schroders from 1995 to 2001. He then served as head of new business development for the property division.
Robertson was elected as the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Faversham and Mid Kent in 2001, a position he held until 2015. During his tenure, he shadowed the Minister for Sport and the Olympics, before being appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Sport and the Olympics in May 2010.
In September 2012, Robertson was appointed as Minister of State in the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, where he oversaw Sport, Olympic Legacy, and Tourism. In October 2013, he was sworn as a Privy Councillor.
After leaving politics, Robertson went on to serve as the Chair of Camelot Group, operator of the National Lottery, from 2018 to 2023. He has also served as the Chair of the British Olympic Association and Birmingham Airport.
In addition to his business ventures, Robertson has been recognized for his philanthropic efforts. In March 2014, he was awarded a Distinguished Fellowship by the University of Reading in recognition of his role in the London 2012 Olympics.
