Brown's professional journey began in 1963, when she joined the Philharmonia Orchestra as a violinist. In 1964, she became a member of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, rising through the ranks to become leader, solo violinist, and director in 1974. Her collaboration with the Academy continued until 1980, although she remained closely associated with the ensemble throughout her life.

In 1981, Brown was appointed artistic director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, earning the prestigious Knight of First Class Order of Merit from King Olav V of Norway for her outstanding contributions. Her tenure with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (1987-1992) was marked by controversy, as she was dismissed due to her inability to commit to more than six weeks per season. However, she returned as principal conductor from 1995 to 1997, following a change in leadership.

Conducting Career

As her health declined and her arthritis progressed, Brown shifted her focus from the violin to conducting. She became guest director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1985-1989) and later, chief conductor of the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra of Denmark. Her passion for conducting led her to continue performing until her final years.
