A Dutch professional footballer who played as a midfielder, known for his skills and achievements in the Eredivisie league.
As a prolific striker and manager, Jack de Gier has left an indelible mark on the world of Dutch football. With a nickname like "Il Butre" or "The Vulture", inspired by the legendary Spanish striker Emilio ButragueƱo, De Gier's skills on the pitch were as sharp as his nickname suggested.
Born on August 6, 1968, in Schijndel, Netherlands, De Gier's love for football was evident from a young age. He began his professional career in the 1988-1989 season with BVV Den Bosch, making his debut at just 20 years old. Over the years, he played for various clubs, including Cambuur Leeuwarden, Go Ahead Eagles, Willem II Tilburg, Lierse SK, NEC Nijmegen, Dunfermline Athletic, and FC Twente.
De Gier's transition to management began on January 1, 2016, when he took the reins as head coach of Eerste Divisie club Almere City. Despite starting at the bottom of the league, he led the team to an eighth-place finish and won a period title, securing a spot in the postseason playoffs for promotion to the Eredivisie.
De Gier's managerial stint hasn't been without controversy. He was fired by NEC Nijmegen on April 2, 2019, following a series of poor results. Despite this, he bounced back, taking on the role of head coach at Go Ahead Eagles in June 2019 and later managing FC Den Bosch from February 2021 until his contract was terminated by mutual consent on March 6, 2023.
Throughout his career, De Gier has demonstrated his adaptability and resilience, making a lasting impact on Dutch football. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers and managers, showcasing the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving success.
