Kubelk's father, an amateur violinist and gardener, recognized his son's exceptional talent at the age of five and arranged for him to study with Karel Weber and Karel Ondek. At eight, Kubelk began his studies at the Prague Conservatory under the guidance of Otakar Ševčík, whose technical approach he would later master.

His performance in 1900 at a Hans Richter concert in London earned him critical acclaim, followed by a successful tour in the United States in 1901. In 1902, he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society's Gold Medal, succeeding the renowned Eugène Ysaÿe.

He played on several legendary instruments, including a Guarneri del Gesù and two Stradivarius violins, one of which was the 1715 Stradivarius Emperor, acquired in 1910. In 1903, Kubelk married Countess Anna Julie Marie Szll von Besseny, with whom he had eight children, including five violinist daughters and three sons, among them the conductor Rafael Kubelk. Kubelk's legacy extends beyond his own performances, as he also contributed to the establishment of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, which he financially supported and brought to London in 1902.
