Known for his smooth, soulful voice and incredible range, Jeffrey Osborne is a legendary American singer-songwriter, musician, and lyricist who rose to fame as the former drummer and lead singer of the R&B/soul group L.T.D. and later became a successful solo artist.
Born on March 9, 1948, in Providence, Rhode Island, Osborne was the youngest of twelve children in a musically inclined family. His father, Clarence "Legs" Osborne, was a popular trumpeter who played with jazz greats like Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington. Osborne's siblings also pursued music careers, including his brother Billy Osborne, who would later become his bandmate in L.T.D.
In 1970, Osborne began his music career as a member of the American soul band Love Men Ltd., which would later become known as L.T.D. The band recorded several hit singles, including "Every Time I Turn Around," "Back in Love Again" (1977), "Concentrate on You," "Love Ballad" (1976), and "Holding On When Love Is Gone" (1978). Initially, Osborne served as the band's drummer, sharing lead vocal duties with his brother Billy, but by 1976, he became the group's primary lead vocalist.
In 1982, Osborne sang the opening song "I Just Want to Be Your Friend" for the comedy film The Toy. He then released his self-titled debut album, which featured two hit singles, "On the Wings of Love" and "I Really Don't Need No Light" (1982), peaking at No. 29 and No. 39, respectively, on the pop chart. His subsequent album, Stay with Me Tonight (1983), became his first solo gold album, spawning four more hits, including "Don't You Get So Mad" (No. 25), the title track (No. 30), and "Plane Love" (No. 10 R&B).
Throughout his career, Osborne has received numerous awards and accolades, including three No. 1 songs on the U.S. R&B Chart and three gold and platinum albums with L.T.D. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards and has performed at various music festivals and concerts.
In addition to his musical accomplishments, Osborne has faced personal challenges, including the loss of his father at the age of 13. Despite these setbacks, he has continued to pursue his passion for music and has become an icon in the industry.
