Born on November 27, 1885, in Felsilosva, Transylvania (then part of the Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary), Rebreanu was the second of thirteen children to Vasile Rebreanu, a schoolteacher, and Ludovica Diuganu. His father, an amateur folklorist, played a significant role in shaping Rebreanu's early life, teaching him at primary school in Major (now Maieru) and instilling in him a love for literature and the arts.
Rebreanu's literary journey began in earnest with the publication of his first volume of novellas, Frmntri (Troublings), in 1912.
