Born on July 8, 1925, in Izano, Italy, Marco C grew up in a family of farmers. He pursued his passion for theology at the seminary in Crema, later enrolling at the Lodi lyceum and subsequently at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He earned a doctorate in dogmatic theology and a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Gregorian University.
Marco C was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Luigi Traglia on March 27, 1948, in the Lateran Basilica in Rome. He returned to Crema, serving as a professor of Scripture and Vice-Rector of the seminary from 1948 to 1957. He later became the rector in 1950, all while continuing to teach and mentor young clergy.
On April 22, 1970, Marco C was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Bologna and the Titular Bishop of Vulturia. He received his episcopal consecration on May 17, 1970, from Bishop Carlo Manziana, with Archbishop Franco Costa and Bishop Placido Cambiaghi serving as co-consecrators. His episcopal motto, "Christus ipse pax," translates to "Christ Himself is peace."
FOLLOWING THE ASCENSION OF POPE JOHN PAUL I TO THE PAPACY IN 1978 AND HIS DEATH THIRTY-THREE DAYS LATER, MARCO C WAS NAMED HIS SUCCESSOR AS PATRIARCH OF VENICE BY POPE JOHN PAUL II ON DECEMBER 7, 1978. He took canonical possession of the see on January 1, 1979, and made his official entrance into his new archdiocese on January 7, 1979. On June 30, 1979, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the cardinalate.
