Petrov began his professional journey with Botev Vratsa in his native Bulgaria before moving to CSKA Sofia, where he caught the attention of Servette with impressive performances in the UEFA Cup. The Swiss side signed him for 1.2 million German marks in 1999.
In 2001, Petrov made a significant move to VfL Wolfsburg, where he established himself as a force to be reckoned with. He made his competitive debut in the Intertoto Cup, scoring a goal and providing an assist in a 4-3 home win over Dinamo Minsk.
