Born on February 1, 1921, in Twickenham, Middlesex, Sallis grew up in a banking family and was educated at Minchenden Grammar School. After a stint in a bank, Sallis joined the RAF during World War II, where he served as a wireless mechanic and taught radio procedures.
It was during his time in the RAF that Sallis discovered his passion for acting, starring in an amateur production of Noël Coward's Hay Fever. This sparked a desire to pursue a career in acting, and after the war, Sallis won a Korda scholarship to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Sallis' professional career spanned over 60 years, with credits including Danger Man, The Avengers, Doctor Who, and The Persuaders!. However, it was his role as Norman Clegg in Last of the Summer Wine that cemented his place in the hearts of British audiences.
Appearing in all 295 episodes, Sallis became the only actor to appear in every episode of the show, which ran from 1973 to 2010. He also played Norman Clegg's father in the prequel series First of the Summer Wine.
Sallis' contributions to British television were recognized with a BAFTA TV Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in Last of the Summer Wine. He also received a lifetime achievement award from the British Comedy Awards.
Throughout his career, Sallis remained humble and grounded, crediting his success to his colleagues and the opportunities he had. In an interview, Sallis once said, "I've been very lucky, and I've had a wonderful time."
