Born on November 17, 1966, in St. Louis, Missouri, Fortus began his musical journey at the tender age of 4, learning violin and drums. He went on to study at the Conservatory of the Arts in St. Louis and Southern Illinois University, playing in several youth symphonies in the St. Louis area.
In 1984, Fortus founded the alternative band The Eyes, which later morphed into Pale Divine after signing with Atlantic Records. The band released one album, Straight to Goodbye, and toured extensively across the US, opening for The Psychedelic Furs.
In 1992, Fortus teamed up with Richard Butler and Frank Ferrer to form Love Spit Love, releasing two albums before going on hiatus. When The Psychedelic Furs reformed in 2000, Fortus joined the band as second guitarist, contributing to their live album Beautiful Chaos: Greatest Hits Live.
Fortus spent three years with the NYC-based outfit Loup Garou, playing club dates and festivals across Europe and contributing to their third album, Ten Wines from Jobs Vineyard.
