Legendary lead vocalist of the Isley Brothers, known for iconic hits like "Shout" and "It's Your Thing", blending rock, soul, and funk to create a unique sound.
Ronald Isley, born on May 21, 1941, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer, renowned for his iconic voice and contributions to the legendary family music group, The Isley Brothers. As the lead singer and founding member, Isley has been the driving force behind the group's unprecedented success, shaping the sound of R&B, soul, and rock music for over six decades.
Born to Sallye Bernice (née Bell) and O'Kelly Isley Sr., Ronald was the third of six brothers, including O'Kelly Isley Jr., Rudolph Isley, Vernon Isley, Ernie Isley, and Marvin Isley. Growing up in a musical family, Isley began singing at the tender age of two, winning a $25 war bond (approximately $429 in 2022) at a spiritual contest at the Union Baptist Church.
By the age of seven, Isley was performing onstage at venues such as the Regal Theater in Chicago, alongside legendary artists like Dinah Washington. After his brother Vernon's tragic death at 11, Isley and his remaining brothers continued to pursue music, eventually forming The Isley Brothers in 1957. The group's debut single, "Shout," was released in 1959, marking the beginning of their illustrious career.
In 1969, Isley and his brothers established TNeck Records, a label that allowed them to produce themselves without the constraints of record labels. This move enabled the group to experiment with new sounds and styles, resulting in the 1973 album "3 + 3," which introduced brothers Ernie Isley and Marvin Isley and in-law Chris Jasper to the lineup.
