Born on January 12, 1673, in Venice, Italy, Rosalba Carriera was the daughter of Andrea Carriera, a lawyer, and Alba Foresti, a skilled embroiderer and lace maker. Growing up, Carriera was surrounded by the world of art and craft, learning lacemaking and other skills from her mother and sisters.
The declining lace industry prompted Carriera to explore new avenues, and she discovered her passion for painting. Initially, she created miniatures for snuffbox lids and as independent works, eventually transitioning to pastel portraits. Her talent did not go unnoticed, and she soon attracted prominent foreign visitors to Venice, including young nobles on the grand tour and diplomats.
In 1704, Carriera was honored with the title of Accademico di merito by the Roman Accademia di San Luca, a prestigious recognition reserved for non-Roman painters. This accolade not only solidified her position as a respected artist but also opened doors to new opportunities.
Between 1720 and 1721, Carriera worked in Paris, where her art was in high demand. As a guest of the esteemed art collector and amateur, Pierre Crozat, she had the opportunity to paint luminaries such as Watteau, royalty, and nobility, including the King and Regent.
