This intense regimen led to her debut concert in Berlin at just six years old, followed by a Parisian performance with a full orchestra at seven.

At fifteen, she felt suffocated by the expectations of her talent and fled her oppressive environment, leaving behind the music world to pursue a degree at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1944, Ruth married George Born, but the union ended in divorce nine years later. During this period, she began teaching piano to supplement her income, eventually restarting her performing career in 1951. This marked a new era of creative expression, with appearances at the Carmel Bach Festival and a subsequent appointment as Artist-in-Residence at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, a position she held until 1987.
