Sangolli Rayanna, a renowned Indian military leader, is best known for his bravery and unwavering commitment to resist British rule in India during the early 19th century. His fearless opposition to the British East India Company (EIC) and his role in the rebellion led by Kittur Chennamma have etched his name in the annals of Indian history.
Born on August 15, 1798, in Sangolli, Belgavi, into a Kuruba family, Rayanna enlisted in the military of the princely state of Kittur, rising to the position of a senior commander. His military prowess and strategic acumen earned him a reputation as a skilled and formidable leader.
In 1824, Kittur Chennamma, the ruler of Kittur, led a rebellion against the British East India Company in response to the EIC's doctrine of lapse. Rayanna fought alongside Chennamma, and although the rebellion was unsuccessful, his bravery and loyalty to the Kittur kingdom were evident. Following the rebellion, Rayanna was arrested by the British, but later released.
Incensed by the EIC's confiscation of his lands and heavy taxation of the remaining territories, Rayanna continued to oppose British domination in the region. He planned to install Shivalingappa, the adopted son of Chennamma, as the new ruler of Kittur. In 1829, he started an insurgency against the British, recruiting local peasants who were similarly discontented with the EIC. His forces targeted EIC administration buildings, British forces, and local treasuries, constantly evading British attacks by remaining mobile. Rayanna's insurgency lasted until 1831, when he was captured by the British and executed by hanging on January 26, 1831.
Rayanna's life and legacy have inspired generations of Indians, and his story has been immortalized in two Kannada-language films: Kranthiveera Sangolli Rayanna (1967) and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (2012). His bravery and sacrifice have become a symbol of resistance against colonial rule, and his name is revered in Indian history.
