Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is a name synonymous with groundbreaking achievement, as he became the first Malaysian to venture into space in 2007. This remarkable feat was made possible through the Angkasawan program, a collaborative effort between Malaysia and Russia.
Sheikh Muszaphar was born on July 27, 1972, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to a family of mixed Malay, Minangkabau, and Arab descent. He spent his formative years in Muar, where he attended high school at Maktab Rendah Sains MARA.
He pursued a degree in medicine from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India, and later worked as an orthopaedic medical officer at various hospitals in Malaysia, including the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
In 2006, Sheikh Muszaphar was selected as one of four finalists for the Malaysian Angkasawan spaceflight program, which was established as part of a multibillion-dollar deal between Malaysia and Russia for the purchase of Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter jets.
After completing initial training at Star City in Russia, Sheikh Muszaphar and Faiz Khaleed were chosen to undergo an 18-month training program in Russia. In September 2007, it was announced that Sheikh Muszaphar would be flying on the Soyuz TMA-11 mission.
On October 10, 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar launched into space aboard the Soyuz TMA-11 spacecraft, accompanied by the Expedition 16 crew. He spent nine days on the International Space Station, conducting scientific experiments and participating in educational activities.
Sheikh Muszaphar's achievement has inspired a generation of young Malaysians to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). His journey has also sparked interest in space exploration and research in the country.
As a role model, Sheikh Muszaphar has demonstrated that with hard work and determination, Malaysians can achieve great things, even in the most challenging fields.
In addition to his medical career and spaceflight experience, Sheikh Muszaphar is also a part-time model. He has been involved in various charity events and has supported causes such as education and environmental conservation.
"Space is the next frontier, and I believe Malaysia has a role to play in it."
"As a Malaysian, I feel proud to be part of this historic moment, and I hope to inspire others to pursue their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem."
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor's remarkable journey serves as a testament to human ingenuity and the power of determination. His achievement has left an indelible mark on Malaysia's history, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
