In the United States, Cherkassky continued his studies at the Curtis Institute of Music under the guidance of the legendary pianist and teacher, Josef Hofmann. However, before studying with Hofmann, Cherkassky auditioned for Sergei Rachmaninoff, who advised him to pause his performing career for at least two years and to modify his hand position at the keyboard. Conversely, Hofmann encouraged Cherkassky to continue performing, a decision that would shape his future as a concert pianist.
Cherkassky's association with Hofmann continued until 1935, during which time he practiced for four hours daily, a regimen he maintained throughout his life. This dedication allowed him to master an extensive repertoire, spanning from baroque to Berio, to an exacting standard. His passion for travel also began during this period, with trips to Australia, New Zealand, the Far East, Russia, and Europe.
In the 1940s, Cherkassky moved to California, where he appeared at the Hollywood Bowl with conductors such as Sir John Barbirolli. He performed actively until the end of his life, with many of his best recordings made under live concert recital conditions.
