He then pursued his secondary education at Penang Free School and later attended Wellingborough School in England for four years until 1963.

After completing his education, Sirajuddin underwent training as a Cadet Officer at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst, England, from January 1964 to December 1965. Upon his return to Malaysia, he served with the Ministry of Defence, initially as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of the Malaysian Reconnaissance Corps. He was later transferred to Sabah and then to Sarawak, before serving in Pahang for several years. In 1969, he resigned from the military to return to Perlis, where he would eventually ascend to the throne.

In 1960, while still a student, Sirajuddin was appointed the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Perlis. This marked the beginning of his journey towards becoming the Raja of Perlis, a position he would eventually assume in 2000.
