Bassist and songwriter for the iconic rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, known for hits like "Proud Mary" and "Bad Moon Rising".
Cook grew up in El Cerrito, California, where he attended El Cerrito High School alongside his future bandmates Doug Clifford and the Fogerty brothers, Tom and John. It was during these high school years that Cook, Clifford, and John Fogerty formed a band, which would eventually evolve into Creedence Clearwater Revival after Tom joined.
As the bassist for CCR, Cook was an integral part of the band's distinctive sound and success. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, CCR released a string of hit albums and singles, including "Proud Mary," "Bad Moon Rising," and "Down on the Corner." Cook's bass lines provided the foundation for the band's rootsy, blues-infused rock sound.
Following the breakup of CCR in the mid-1970s, Cook went on to pursue other musical ventures. He and Clifford joined the Don Harrison Band, releasing two albums in 1976 and 1977. In 1979, Cook produced 15 songs by Roky Erickson and the Aliens, which were released in 1980 on two LPs with different running orders, The Evil One and I Think of Demons.
From 1986 to 1991, Cook was a member of the country band Southern Pacific, with whom he covered the Erickson song "It's a Cold Night for Alligators" for the tribute album Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye: A Tribute to Roky Erickson.
In 1995, Cook reunited with Clifford, forming the band Creedence Clearwater Revisited. This new iteration of the band has been touring and performing Creedence Clearwater Revival's classic songs to enthusiastic audiences around the world.
In 1993, Cook was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Creedence Clearwater Revival. He also auditioned for the role of bassist in The Rolling Stones after the departure of Bill Wyman.
Stu Cook's contributions to music have left an indelible mark on the rock genre. As a bassist, producer, and member of Creedence Clearwater Revival, he has earned his place in the annals of rock history.
