Surayud Chulanont is a Thai politician and military leader, best known for serving as the Prime Minister of Thailand from 2006 to 2008, as well as the head of Thailand's interim government during that period. He is a former supreme commander of the Royal Thai Army and currently serves as a Privy Councilor to King Vajiralongkorn.
Surayud was born on August 28, 1943, to a military family. However, his father defected from the Royal Thai Army to the Communist Party of Thailand when Surayud was just a boy. Despite this, Surayud joined the Thai Army and rose to power as an aide to General Prem Tinsulanonda. He commanded troops during the violent 1992 crackdown on anti-government protesters, also known as Bloody May, although he denied giving his men the order to shoot protesters.
Surayud was promoted to army commander during the government of Chuan Leekpai and later to supreme commander in 2003, under the government of Thaksin Shinawatra. Upon his retirement from the army, he was appointed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej to the Privy Council of Thailand. In 2006, General Sonthi Boonratklin overthrew the government of Shinawatra in a coup and implored Surayud to head the interim government.
Surayud's government was marred by controversy, with a significant worsening in perceived levels of corruption. His Deputy Finance Minister, Sommai Pasee, was sentenced to jail for abuse of power. Surayud also faced criticism for raising the military budget by 35%, as well as accusations of economic mismanagement, rampant human rights abuses, and flip-flopping on numerous policies. Additionally, Thailand's economic growth rate slowed to its lowest level in five years, and the country was ranked lowest in the region in terms of freedom of expression.
Despite the controversies surrounding his government, Surayud's legacy is marked by his efforts to apologize for past mistakes and promote national reconciliation. His leadership also played a significant role in shaping Thailand's modern political landscape. Today, Surayud continues to serve as a Privy Councilor to King Vajiralongkorn, providing counsel and guidance to the monarch.
