Sylvinho was born in São Paulo, Brazil, and began his professional career at Corinthians in 1994. During his time at the club, he won several honors, including the Copa do Brasil in 1995, the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 1998, and the Campeonato Paulista in 1995, 1997, and 1999.
In 1999, Sylvinho became the first-ever Brazilian player to sign for Arsenal, choosing the Gunners over North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
