Born on February 24, 1972, in Athens, Greece, Currentzis began his musical journey at the tender age of four, taking piano lessons. He later pursued violin studies at the age of seven and entered the National Conservatory, Athens, at twelve. Under the guidance of Professor George Hadjinikos and later Professor B. Shreck, he delved into composition studies.
Currentzis's conducting career took off in 1994, when he received a scholarship from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation to study at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory under the tutelage of Ilya Musin. This marked the beginning of his ascent as a prominent conductor, leading him to become the principal conductor of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre from 2004 to 2010.
In 2004, Currentzis founded the Orchestra MusicAeterna, which quickly gained recognition for its unique, energetic performances. This was followed by the establishment of the Chorus MusicAeterna in 2009. As the music director of the Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre from 2011, he brought both ensembles to the Russian stage, revolutionizing the classical music scene.
In 2009, Currentzis ventured into the world of cinema, acting in Ilya Khrzhanovskys' film "Dau," based on the life of physicist Lev Landau. His talent soon caught the attention of international audiences, leading to his appointment as principal guest conductor of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2011.
In 2018, Currentzis became the first chief conductor of the SWR Symphonieorchester, formed by the merger of the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. Under his leadership, the orchestra experienced a surge in creativity and innovation, earning critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences.
Currentzis's remarkable journey has been marked by numerous awards and honors, including a 3-year contract extension with the SWR Symphonieorchester in 2021. His unique approach to classical music has earned him a loyal following, and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional performances has solidified his position as a leading maestro of our time.
