She was discovered by Bob Hope while he was touring Australia, and he encouraged her to try her luck in Hollywood.
In 1955, Shaw signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and made her United States film debut in The Eddy Duchin Story opposite Tyrone Power in 1956.
