A pioneering accountant who helped establish the Philippines' largest accounting firm, known for his expertise in auditing and financial management, and his contributions to the country's economic development.
Washington SyCip, a trailblazing accountant, is renowned for founding two esteemed institutions: the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and SGV & Co., one of the largest accounting firms in the Philippines. This Chinese-Filipino-American luminary left an indelible mark on the finance and education sectors, shaping the course of Asia's economic landscape.
SyCip was born on June 30, 1921, in Manila, Philippines, to Albino and Helen SyCip. His father, Albino, co-founded Chinabank in 1920. SyCip's early years were spent in Shanghai before attending Padre Burgos Elementary School and Victorino Mapa High School. He demonstrated exceptional academic prowess, skipping three grade levels in elementary school.
SyCip earned a commerce degree at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) with summa cum laude honors at the tender age of 17. He taught at UST while pursuing a master's degree. He passed the board examinations for Certified Public Accountants at 18.
In 1940, SyCip traveled to the United States to attend Columbia University in New York, aiming to complete a postgraduate degree. However, his plans were disrupted by the outbreak of World War II. Upon learning of his father's imprisonment in the Philippines by Japanese forces, SyCip enlisted in the US Army in 1942 and became a naturalized US citizen in 1943.
SyCip's exceptional intelligence earned him a spot in a language school in Colorado, where he studied Japanese, and later in Virginia, where he studied cryptography. He was deployed to Calcutta, British India, as a codebreaker.
After being discharged from the US Army, SyCip returned to Manila at 24 and initially taught accounting at the University of Santo Tomas and two other colleges. However, he soon founded SGV & Co. in 1946, which would become one of the largest and most respected accounting firms in the Philippines.
In 1968, SyCip co-founded the Asian Institute of Management (AIM), a premier business school dedicated to developing Asian business leaders. AIM's establishment marked a significant milestone in Asia's economic development, providing a platform for business education and research.
SyCip was a strong advocate for education and economic development in Asia. He believed that a well-educated and skilled workforce was essential for driving economic growth and prosperity in the region. Throughout his career, SyCip emphasized the importance of ethics, integrity, and social responsibility in business.
SyCip received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to education, accounting, and entrepreneurship. Some of his notable awards include the Philippines' highest civilian honor, the Order of Lakandula, and the Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award.
Washington SyCip's remarkable life and achievements serve as a testament to his vision, perseverance, and dedication to education and economic development. His institutions, SGV & Co. and AIM, continue to thrive, shaping the business landscape in Asia and beyond.
