Wolfgang, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken, was a prominent figure in 16th-century Germany, known for introducing the Reformation to Zweibrücken in 1537. As a member of the Wittelsbach family, he played a significant role in shaping the region's religious and political landscape.

Early Life and Regency

Born on September 26, 1526, Wolfgang was the only son of Louis II, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken, and his wife Elisabeth of Hesse. After his father's death in 1532, Wolfgang's uncle Rupert, later the Count of Veldenz, served as his regent until 1543.

Reformation and Territorial Expansion

With the support of his regent, Wolfgang introduced the Reformation to Zweibrücken in 1537. This bold move sparked a chain of events that would define his reign. In 1557, he received the territory of Palatinate-Neuburg in accordance with the Contract of Heidelberg, significantly expanding his domain.

Conflict and Restoration

In 1548, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V occupied Wolfgang's Protestant territories and reintroduced Catholic practices. However, Wolfgang regained his territories in 1552. Despite the Peace of Augsburg in 1555, several ecclesiastical states in Germany were secularized in 1557, with Wolfgang obtaining a few of them.

Military Involvements

In 1566, Wolfgang served as a cavalry officer in the Turkish Wars. Later, in 1569, he came to the aid of French Huguenots with 14,000 mercenaries during the Third French War of Religion. His military intervention was financed in part by Queen Elizabeth I of England. Unfortunately, Wolfgang was killed in the conflict while invading Burgundy.

Legacy and Succession

Wolfgang's death led to the division of his land among his five sons, who created three branches: Philip Louis (House of Palatinate-Neuburg), John (House of Palatinate-Zweibrücken), and Charles (House of Palatinate-Birkenfeld). Otto Henry and Frederick had no surviving sons. The House of Palatinate-Neuburg would later inherit the Electorate of the Palatinate.
