An American-English actress who appeared in numerous films and television shows, often playing elegant and sophisticated characters, and was a popular leading lady in the 1940s and 1950s.
Yolande Donlan was an American-born British-based actress who left an indelible mark on the world of theatre and film, captivating audiences with her captivating performances on both sides of the Atlantic.
Born on June 2, 1920, in Jersey City, New Jersey, to James Donlan, a character actor and singer, and Teresa Donlan, Yolande's early life was steeped in the performing arts. Her early credited roles included Frenchy, the maid in the horror film The Devil Bat (1940), alongside Bela Lugosi, and other small roles often playing French-accented maid characters.
Donlan's breakout role came when she played Carole Landis' maid in Turnabout (1940) and one of Red Skelton's concubines in DuBarry Was a Lady (1942). However, it was her portrayal of Billie Dawn in a touring production of Born Yesterday by Garson Kanin that truly showcased her talent, catching the attention of the legendary Laurence Olivier.
Olivier, impressed by Donlan's performance, flew to Boston to confirm the opinion of American reviewers and chose her to star in his production of Born Yesterday in London's West End. The production opened at the Garrick Theatre in January 1947 and was very well received, solidifying Donlan's status as a rising star.
After her successful run in Born Yesterday, Donlan remained in the United Kingdom and began accepting film work. She worked with director Val Guest on several films, including Travellers Joy (1949), Miss Pilgrims Progress (1949) with Michael Rennie, The Body Said No (1950), Mister Drakes Duck (1951) with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Penny Princess (1952) in the title role, costarring with Dirk Bogarde.
In 1950, British exhibitors voted Donlan the most promising female newcomer, a testament to her growing reputation as a talented and versatile actress.
Throughout her career, Donlan continued to work extensively in theatre, starring in plays such as Cage me a Peacock by Noel Langley (1948) and To Dorothy, a Son by Roger MacDougall (1950). Her dedication to her craft earned her a reputation as a talented and respected actress in both the UK and the US.
In 1954, Donlan married Val Guest, with whom she had worked on several films, following the end of their previous marriages. The union marked the beginning of a long and happy partnership, both personally and professionally.
Yolande Donlan's remarkable career, which spanned over four decades, left an indelible mark on the world of theatre and film. Her captivating performances, both on stage and screen, continue to inspire and delight audiences to this day, cementing her place as one of the most talented actresses of her generation.
Donlan passed away on December 30, 2014, but her legacy lives on, a testament to her enduring talent, dedication, and passion for her craft.
