Yuri Bashmet, a Russian conductor, violinist, and violist, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished musicians of our time. Born on January 24, 1953, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia, Bashmet's musical journey began at a young age. His paternal grandmother, Tsilya Efimovna, was a singing student at the conservatory, while his maternal grandmother, Darya Axentyevna, was known for her interpretations of native Hutsul songs.
Bashmet graduated from the Lviv secondary special music school in 1971 and went on to study at the Moscow Conservatory from 1971 to 1976. During this period, he was fortunate to have Professor Vadim Borisovsky and later Professor Fyodor Druzhinin as his teachers and mentors.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Bashmet developed his career as a solo performer, making his debut with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, founded by R. Barshay, on a tour of Germany in 1976. This marked the beginning of his illustrious career, which would take him to the world's leading concert halls, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Barbican in London, and the Berlin Philharmonic.
As the first violist to perform a solo recital in many of these iconic venues, Bashmet has collaborated with some of the most esteemed conductors of our time, including Mstislav Rostropovich, Seiji Ozawa, and Valery Gergiev, among others.
In 1972, Bashmet acquired a 1758 viola made by Milanese luthier Paolo Testore, which has remained his trusted companion for performances to date. This exquisite instrument has been an integral part of his artistic expression, allowing him to explore the full range of emotions and tonal colors.
Yuri Bashmet's contributions to the world of classical music are immeasurable.
