President Wilson seeks war declaration against Germany (United States Capitol, Washington, D.C., 20515, USA) 1917
The United States had been trying to stay neutral in the Great War, but Germany's aggressive submarine warfare and the sinking of the passenger ship Lusitania finally pushed President Woodrow Wilson to take a stand. On April 2, 1917, Wilson, once an adamant anti-war advocate, asked Congress to declare war on Germany, marking a significant turning point in American history. The president's reluctant decision was largely influenced by Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare and the revelation of the Zimmermann Telegram, which proposed an alliance between Germany and Mexico. As Wilson addressed Congress, he emphasized the need to make the world "safe for democracy" and protect American national interests. In response, Congress overwhelmingly approved the declaration of war, drawing the United States into the global conflict.
