A pioneering female publisher who built a media empire with her husband, creating a popular women's magazine that became a cultural phenomenon in post-war Germany.
Aenne Burda, born Anna Magdalene Lemminger, was a German publisher and entrepreneur who revolutionized the world of magazine publishing, particularly in the realm of women's fashion. She is best known for founding the Burda Group, a media conglomerate based in Offenburg and Munich, Germany, which has become a household name in the publishing industry.
Born on July 28, 1909, in Offenburg, German Empire, Aenne Burda was the daughter of a steam engine fireman. She chose her name after the popular song "Ännchen von Tharau." After leaving convent high school at 17, she became a cashier at the Offenburg electricity company. In 1930, she met printer and publisher Franz Burda, son of Franz Burda, the founder of the Burda printing company. The couple married a year later, on July 9, 1931, and had three sons: Franz (1932-2017), Frieder (1936-2019), and Hubert (1940).
Aenne Burda founded her own fashion magazine printing and publishing company in her hometown of Offenburg in 1949. The same year, she launched Favorit, a magazine that would later be renamed Burda Moden. The first issue of Burda Moden was published in 1950 with a circulation of 100,000. The magazine's popularity soared after 1952, when it began to include sheets of paper with patterns for clothes. This innovative approach made Burda Moden a household name, and it soon became one of the leading fashion magazines in Germany.
In 1987, Burda Moden became the first Western magazine to be published in the Soviet Union. Today, Burda Fashion is published in 90 countries in 16 different languages. Aenne Burda's vision and entrepreneurial spirit led to the launch of Burda CARINA in 1977, a fashion and lifestyle magazine targeting a younger female audience.
Aenne Burda founded two charitable foundations, supporting young academics and seniors in her hometown of Offenburg. Her philanthropic efforts and dedication to her community earned her recognition as one of the symbols of the German economic miracle.
My aim is to put together practical fashions at an affordable price that can be worn by women of all social classes.
Aenne Burda's remarkable life and career serve as a testament to her innovative spirit, entrepreneurial drive, and commitment to making fashion accessible to all. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of publishers, entrepreneurs, and fashion enthusiasts around the world.
