A 17th-century nobleman who fought against the Mughal Empire and was known for his bravery and loyalty, becoming a legendary figure in Rajput history.
Amar Singh Rathore, a legendary warrior from the seventeenth-century Rajputana, is renowned for his exceptional bravery and unwavering loyalty. He is celebrated in popular ballads across Rajasthan, Western Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab for his daring exploits and unflinching dedication to his principles.
Born on December 11, 1613, Amar Singh was the eldest son of Raja Gaj Singh I of the Rathore Kingdom of Marwar. His mother, Songariji, was the granddaughter of Rao Man Singh Songara of Pali and maternal uncle of Maharana Pratap Singh I of Mewar.
Despite being the rightful heir, Amar Singh was disinherited and exiled by his family. This shocking turn of events was due to his father's fondness for his younger half-brother, Kunwar Jaswant Singh, and the influence of his favorite concubine, Anara Bai, who bore a grudge against Amar Singh.
Amar Singh entered the imperial Mughal service, where his exceptional bravery and battle prowess earned him a high rank in the imperial nobility. He caught the attention of the emperor himself, who appointed him the subedar (governor) of Nagaur, a region directly ruled by the emperor.
In 1644, Amar Singh's life took a dramatic turn when the emperor asked him to pay a fine for an unauthorized absence. Enraged, Amar Singh stabbed and killed the Wazir of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, Salabat Khan, who had been sent to collect the fine, in the emperor's presence.
Amar Singh's fearless actions and unyielding spirit have inspired countless generations. He is celebrated in popular ballads and folk tales across the region, and his name has become synonymous with bravery and loyalty.
Amar Singh Rathore's remarkable story serves as a testament to the power of courage and conviction. His unwavering commitment to his principles and his unshakeable bravery have left an indelible mark on the annals of history, inspiring generations to come.
