Born on July 26, 1958, in Ottawa, Ontario, Hewitt's musical journey began at the tender age of three with her mother as her first piano teacher. This early start led to a scholarship at the age of five, and her first full-length recital at nine.
Hewitt's musical education continued at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, where she studied with Earle Moss and Myrtle Guerrero from 1964 to 1973. She later became a student of French pianist Jean-Paul Sevilla at the University of Ottawa.
Hewitt's international career as a soloist and recitalist has taken her to every corner of the globe. Her most celebrated achievement is her ambitious recording project, which began in 1994 and concluded in 2005, featuring all of Bach's major keyboard works.

Hewitt has recorded two discs of Mozart concertos with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova and a third with Ottawa's National Arts Centre Orchestra, conducted by Hannu Lintu. She has also performed with the DSO Berlin, recording the Schumann Piano Concerto with Lintu.
In 2005, Hewitt founded the Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria, Italy, where she serves as artistic director, showcasing her passion for sharing music with diverse audiences.
