Bernard Haitink is renowned for his illustrious career as a conductor, violinist, and music director, shaping the classical music landscape with his extraordinary talent and dedication. Born on 4 March 1929 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Haitink was exposed to music from an early age. His father, Willem Haitink, was a civil servant, and his mother, Anna Clara Verschaffelt, worked for Alliance Française. His maternal grandmother, who was Jewish, fled the country during World War II.
Haitink pursued his passion for music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied the violin and conducting under Felix Hupka. He further refined his skills by attending courses in conducting under Ferdinand Leitner in 1954 and 1955.
Haitink's conducting debut took place on 19 July 1954 with the Netherlands Radio Union Orchestra (later the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming second conductor in 1955 and chief conductor in 1957.
His association with the Concertgebouw Orchestra began in 1956, substituting for Carlo Maria Giulini. Following the sudden death of Eduard van Beinum, Haitink was appointed first conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1959, a position he held until 1963.
Haitink's exceptional talent and leadership skills led to his appointment as principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979. During this period, he also served as music director at Glyndebourne Opera from 1978 to 1988.
In 1987, Haitink became music director of the Royal Opera House, a position he held until 2002. He then became principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden, followed by his appointment as principal conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2010.
Haitink's contributions to classical music have been recognized with numerous awards, including multiple Grammy Awards and the 2015 Gramophone Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Bernard Haitink's impact on classical music is unparalleled. With over 90 concerts conducted at The Proms in London, his final performance took place on 3 September 2019 with the Vienna Philharmonic.
