A Legendary Career in Jazz Fusion

Bob Moses is a renowned American jazz drummer, known for his innovative approach to drumming and his contributions to the development of jazz fusion. With a career spanning over five decades, Moses has played with some of the most iconic figures in jazz, leaving an indelible mark on the genre.

Early Life and Career

Born on January 28, 1948, in New York, United States, Moses was drawn to music from an early age. He began playing drums at the age of 12 and soon found himself performing with jazz luminaries such as Roland Kirk and Larry Coryell. In 1966, Moses co-founded The Free Spirits, a pioneering jazz fusion ensemble, with Coryell.

Collaborations and Influential Works

Moses' illustrious career is filled with notable collaborations and influential works. He played with Gary Burton's quartet from 1967 to 1969, contributing to the Grammy-nominated album Gary Burton Quartet in Concert. His work with Burton also included the landmark album A Genuine Tong Funeral, where he was credited as Lonesome Dragon due to creative differences with the album's composer, Carla Bley. In the 1970s, Moses recorded with Burton, Pat Metheny, Mike Gibbs, and Gil Goldstein, among others. He was also a member of the jazz fusion group Compost, along with Harold Vick, Jumma Santos, Jack Gregg, and Jack DeJohnette.

As a Leader and Educator

Moses released his first album as a leader, Love Animal, in 1968. His subsequent albums, including Bittersuite in the Ozone (1973) and When Elephants Dream of Music (1983), were critically acclaimed. He has also penned the drum method book Drum Wisdom, sharing his expertise with aspiring drummers. In addition to his performing and recording career, Moses has taught at the New England Conservatory, passing on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of jazz musicians.

Recent Works and Legacy

In 2022, Moses released a trio album with Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen and Slovenian guitarist Samo Salamon, entitled Pure and Simple. This latest work showcases his continued creativity and dedication to pushing the boundaries of jazz. Throughout his remarkable career, Bob Moses has left an indelible mark on the jazz world. His innovative approach to drumming, his collaborations with legendary musicians, and his contributions to jazz education have cemented his status as a true pioneer in the genre.
