Born on October 27, 1945, in Strømmen, Norway, Andersen's musical journey began as a jazz guitarist in the Riverside Swing Group in Lillestrøm (1961-1963). In 1964, he switched to double bass, soon becoming a core member of Oslo's thriving jazz scene.
Andersen's talent and dedication earned him the title of "Best Bassist" by Jazznytt in 1967. This recognition led to his inclusion in the Jan Garbarek Quartet (1967-1973), where he worked alongside Terje Rypdal and Jon Christensen. During this period, he also collaborated with Karin Krog, George Russell, and Don Cherry, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and sought-after musician.
Andersen's partnerships with visiting American musicians, such as Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, Bill Frisell, Hampton Hawes, Johnny Griffin, Sonny Rollins, Sheila Jordan, and Chick Corea, expanded his artistic scope and earned him international recognition. In 2009, he was named "Musicien Européen 2008" by the French Académie du Jazz, and in 2010, he received the Ella Award at the Oslo Jazzfestival.
Throughout his career, Andersen has led several critically acclaimed bands, including the Radka Toneff Quintet (1975-1981) and Masqualero. He has recorded over a dozen albums as a band leader for ECM Records, cementing his status as a master of the genre. His most recent album, "Pure and Simple" (2022), features a trio with American drummer Bob Moses and Slovenian guitarist Samo Salamon, showcasing his continued innovation and artistry.
