C. Buddingh, born Cornelis Kees Buddingh, was a renowned Dutch poet, translator, and TV presenter, celebrated for his profound contributions to Dutch literature and culture. He is best known for translating iconic works such as A Clockwork Orange and the complete works of William Shakespeare into Dutch, leaving an enduring legacy in the literary world.
Buddingh was born on August 7, 1918, in Dordrecht, Netherlands. He pursued his education at the HBS from 1930 to 1935 and later obtained his MOA degree in English from The Hague in 1938. Prior to World War II, he served in the military from 1938 to 1940, until he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, which led to a prolonged treatment period.
Buddingh's literary journey began with publications in pre-war literary magazines Den Gulden Winckel and Criterium. In 1941, he debuted with his collection Het gerriteerde lied, featuring surrealist poems that defied the German occupation of the Netherlands. During his time in the sanitarium, he penned his celebrated gorgelrijmen, including the renowned De blauwbilgorgel (1943), inspired by E. Nesbit's English children's novel The Bluebillgurgle.
His gorgelrijmen were published in various editions, including the rare, illustrated collection 10 gorgelrijmen (1954), with only ten printed copies. Buddingh's translations of English works into Dutch were equally notable, with notable examples being John Galsworthy's The Forsyte Saga and, together with his son Wiebe, Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange.
In addition to his literary pursuits, Buddingh was a TV presenter, hosting various programs. He also collaborated with cartoonist Otto Dicke to create the popular newspaper comics Spekkie en Blekkie (1955-1965) and Jesje en Josje.
The C. Buddingh Prijs, a literary award, was established in his honor, recognizing his immense contribution to Dutch literature. His son Wiebe Buddingh followed in his footsteps, becoming the translator of the Harry Potter series into Dutch.
