Charles Miller, an American musician, is best known as the saxophonist and flutist for the multicultural California funk band War, which brought us the legendary hit "Low Rider" in 1975. Born on June 2, 1939, in Olathe, Kansas, Miller moved to Los Angeles with his family at the tender age of two and settled in Long Beach, California. His father, a musician himself, introduced Miller to the world of music, and he soon developed a passion for playing the woodwinds, piano, and guitar in school bands and orchestras.
Before joining War, Miller recorded with various groups, including Seor Soul, and participated in recording sessions with The Ray Charles Band. He also toured with the Debonaires, Brenton Wood, and Afro Blues Quintet. In 1969, Miller met Harold Brown, Howard E. Scott, and Papa Dee Allen in Hollywood, and together, they formed the band Night Shift, which would eventually evolve into War.
Miller's deep, soulful voice is unmistakable on War's hit song "Low Rider," which he co-wrote and recorded at Wally Heider Studios in San Francisco in 1975. The song has since become an iconic classic, sampled by numerous artists, including Flo Rida, and featured in various films and TV shows, such as "Up in Smoke" and "Beverly Hills Chihuahua."
On June 4, 1980, just two days after his 41st birthday, Miller's life was tragically cut short when he was stabbed to death in Los Angeles. Despite his untimely passing, Miller's contributions to War's music and legacy continue to inspire and influence new generations of musicians and fans alike.
