Born on January 2, 1777, in Arolsen, Principality of Waldeck, in the Holy Roman Empire, Rauch's father was employed at the court of Prince Frederick II of Hesse. In 1790, the young Rauch was apprenticed to the court sculptor of Arolsen, Friedrich Valentin. This early training laid the foundation for his future success.
After his father's death in 1796 and his older brother's demise in 1797, Rauch moved to Berlin, where he was appointed groom of the chamber in the king's household.
