Stanfield's early life was a tapestry of diverse experiences. He was apprenticed to a coach decorator in 1806 but soon left due to the drunkenness of his master's wife. He then joined a South Shields collier as a sailor, only to be pressed into the Royal Navy in 1808. During his naval service, he served in the guardship HMS Namur at Sheerness and was eventually discharged on health grounds in 1814.
After his naval service, Stanfield made a voyage to China in 1815 on the East Indiaman Warley, returning with a wealth of sketches that would later influence his art. This experience not only honed his drafting skills but also fueled his passion for the sea, which would become a dominant theme in his work.
An accident forced Stanfield to leave active service, but he soon found a new calling as a decorator and scene painter at the Royalty Theatre in Wellclose Square, London, in August 1816. He worked alongside David Roberts at the Coburg theatre, Lambeth, and in 1823, he became a resident scene painter at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where he rose to fame through his spectacular scenery and moving dioramas.
Stanfield abandoned scenery painting after Christmas 1834, although he made exceptions for two personal friends. He then devoted himself to fine art, producing a remarkable body of work that showcased his mastery of marine subjects and landscapes.
