A French military leader who served during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, known for his bravery and tactical genius on the battlefield. He played a key role in several important battles, including the Battle of Castiglione.
Claude de Forbin, a French naval officer, nobleman, and diplomat, is renowned for his extraordinary mission to the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the late 17th century. During his tenure, he became the Grand Admiral of Siam, Governor of Bangkok, and a general in the Siamese army, earning him a place in history as one of the most fascinating figures of his time.
Born on August 6, 1656, in Gardanne, Provence, France, Claude de Forbin came from a family established in Marseille since the 14th century. He was known for his high-spirited and ungovernable nature as a young boy, which eventually led him to run away from home and join the navy under the influence of an uncle.
Forbin served his first campaign in 1675, and later quit the navy to enter the musketeers. However, a duel with Chevalier de Gourdon resulted in his sentence to death by the Parliament of Aix. Fortunately, he managed to obtain a pardon and rejoined the Navy under his brother's identity.
The most remarkable episode of Forbin's life was his mission to Siam, which lasted from 1685 to 1688. During this period, he accompanied the Chevalier de Chaumont as a major aboard the Oiseau. When Chaumont returned to France, Forbin was induced to remain in the service of the Siamese king, King Narai, and accepted the posts of Grand Admiral, General of all the king's armies, and Governor of Bangkok.
During his tenure, Forbin crushed the Makassar Revolt at Bangkok, although he nearly lost his own life in the process. Despite his initial reluctance to accept the positions, Forbin proved to be an able and effective leader, earning the respect of the Siamese people and the king.
Forbin's bravery and diplomatic skills earned him a place in the annals of history. His mission to Siam marked the beginning of French influence in Southeast Asia, paving the way for future diplomatic and cultural exchanges between France and Siam.
Although Forbin left Siam shortly before King Narai fell ill and was deposed by a coup d'état, his legacy continued to shape the relationships between France and Siam for centuries to come.
