A 17th-century Anglican bishop who played a key role in the Nonjuror schism, advocating for the divine right of kings and refusing to swear allegiance to William III and Mary II. He was a prominent figure in the Church of England during a time of great turmoil.
As the Bishop of Carlisle and a former Lord Spiritual, James Newcome has left an indelible mark on the Anglican Church and the world at large. With a career spanning over four decades, he has been a stalwart advocate for social justice, compassion, and ecological stewardship.
Born on July 24, 1953, in Aldershot, England, James Newcome's early life was marked by the rigors of military postings, courtesy of his father's service in the Royal Artillery. This peripatetic existence took him to Malta and Germany, fostering a sense of adaptability and resilience that would serve him well in his future endeavors.
After attending Marlborough College, where he was Senior Prefect, Newcome went on to study modern history at Trinity College, Oxford. He won the University of Oxford's history of art prize in 1972 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1974, which was later promoted to a Master of Arts degree in 1978.
Newcome's journey into the priesthood began in 1975, when he started studying theology at the University of Cambridge's Selwyn College. He was ordained a deacon in 1978 and a priest in 1979, both times by Robert Runcie, the then-Bishop of St Albans.
His ordained ministry began as a curate at All Saints Leavesden in the Diocese of St Albans, where he served until 1982. From there, he went on to become the Vicar of Bar Hill and Dry Drayton, cementing his reputation as a devoted and compassionate leader.
Newcome's commitment to his faith and his community earned him the respect and admiration of his peers. In 2002, he was appointed the Bishop of Penrith, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Carlisle. Seven years later, in 2009, he became the Bishop of Carlisle, a position he held until his retirement.
During his tenure, Newcome was also a member of the House of Lords as a Lord Spiritual from October 2013, using his platform to advocate for social and environmental causes.
Newcome's spiritual leadership has been marked by a deep commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue. He has been a vocal advocate for the protection of God's creation, urging individuals and communities to take action against climate change and ecological degradation.
His philosophical contributions have been shaped by his understanding of Christianity as a faith that emphasizes compassion, forgiveness, and service to others. Through his teachings and writings, he has inspired countless individuals to live more mindful, responsible, and loving lives.
James Newcome's remarkable life and career serve as a testament to the power of faith, compassion, and service. As a beacon of hope and inspiration, he continues to inspire generations of Christians and non-Christians alike, reminding us of the importance of living lives that reflect our deepest values and principles.
