A 19th-century German Catholic bishop and scholar who advocated for Old Catholicism, a movement that rejected papal infallibility and sought to reform the Catholic Church. He's known for his role in the Old Catholic Church's formation.
Joseph Hubert Reinkens was a German theologian and bishop, best known for his pivotal role in establishing the Old Catholic Church in Germany. As the first German Old Catholic bishop, he broke away from the Roman Catholic Church, rejecting the doctrine of papal infallibility and paving the way for a new era of Christian reform.
Born on March 1, 1821, in Burtscheid, Reinkens was the son of a humble gardener. After his mother's passing in 1836, he took on manual labor to support his numerous siblings, but soon pursued his passion for education, attending the gymnasium at Aachen and later studying theology at the universities of Bonn and Munich.
Reinkens's academic prowess earned him a doctorate in theology in 1849. He went on to become a professor of ecclesiastical history at Breslau and later rector of the university. His writings on early Christian theologians, such as Clement of Alexandria, Hilary of Poitiers, and Martin of Tours, showcased his mastery of the subject.
However, Reinkens's academic pursuits were soon overshadowed by his involvement in the controversy surrounding papal infallibility. He wrote several pamphlets critiquing the doctrine, which ultimately led to his dismissal from the Roman Catholic Church.
In 1870, Reinkens joined forces with Ignaz von Döllinger and other likeminded theologians to resist the dogma of infallibility. Following the Declaration of Nuremberg in 1871, Reinkens played a key role in the Bonn conferences, which brought together Oriental and Anglican churches to discuss the future of Christianity.
In 1873, Reinkens was consecrated as the first German Old Catholic bishop by Dr. Heykamp, bishop of Deventer. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Christian history, as the Old Catholic Church began to take shape under Reinkens's leadership.
Reinkens devoted himself to his office, tirelessly working to establish the Old Catholic Church as a recognized entity in Germany. His efforts paid off, as the church gained official recognition in various German states.
Today, Joseph Hubert Reinkens is remembered as a beacon of reform and a champion of Christian unity. His courage to challenge the status quo continues to inspire theologians and scholars around the world.
