He pursued his philosophical studies in Ebreichsdorf and Catholic theology in Klagenfurt, before earning a doctorate in classical philology and archeology from the University of Vienna in 1970.
Bishop Schwarz's illustrious career spans multiple positions of leadership within the Catholic Church. He served as rector of the interdiocesan seminary, Canisiusheim Centrum Horn, from 1969 to 1978, and later became the superior of the Austrian province of the Salesians in Vienna.
In 1984, he was appointed to a directorship at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome, where he taught Christian classical philology from 1985 onwards. He further assumed the responsibilities of provincial for the Roman Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1993.
From 1999 to 2005, Bishop Schwarz served as the National Director of Pontifical Mission Societies in Austria, popularly known as Missio. This significant role enabled him to promote missionary work and foster global understanding.
