He later worked in repertory theatre and toured Europe with the New Park Theatre Club, eventually becoming its artistic director.
In the 1960s, Evans immigrated to Australia, where he began working in commercial radio and touring with the Young Elizabethan Players theatre company. He soon made his mark on Australian television, appearing in popular shows such as Homicide, You Can't See Round Corners, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, and Number 96.
One of Evans' most notable roles was in the Australian television series Prisoner, where he played several characters, including a colleague at Eddie Cook's electrical firm, the foreman at the printshop, and Foxy, an old friend of Lizzie Birdsworth. He eventually took on the permanent role of Detective Howard Simmons in 1985.
Evans also appeared in other popular television shows, such as Blue Heelers, where he played Keith Purvis in the 1990s, and later returned in a smaller guest role in 2005.
In addition to his television work, Evans appeared in numerous films, including Mad Dog Morgan (1976), Mad Max (1979), The Island (1980), Manganinnie (1980), The Plains of Heaven (1982), Kitty and the Bagman (1983), and Celia (1989). His final film role was in Charlie and Boots (2009).
