Regina Ghazaryan, an Armenian painter and public figure, is best known for her unwavering dedication to preserving the literary works of the celebrated poet Yeghishe Charents during the oppressive regime of Joseph Stalin. Her courageous efforts ensured the survival of Charents' manuscripts, which would have otherwise been lost forever.
Born on April 17, 1915, in Yerevan, Armenia, Ghazaryan came from a family of Armenian genocide survivors and nobility. She met Charents in 1930, and the two formed a deep bond, with Charents adopting her as both an intimate friend and a witness to his solitary hours.
In 1937, Charents, imprisoned by Stalin's regime, secretly informed his wife Izabella that she should entrust all of his writings to Ghazaryan, who would save them from destruction. Ghazaryan hid and preserved over 7,000 lines of Charents' work, including "Requiem to Komitas," "The Nameless," "Songs of Autumn," and "Navzike," in her garden.
Ghazaryan's bravery extended beyond literary preservation; she participated in World War II as a military pilot. After the war, she pursued her passion for art, graduating from the Yerevan Fine Arts Institute in 1951. Her artistic talents earned her recognition, and she became a member of the Painters Union of Armenia.
In 1954, Anastas Mikoyan called for Charents' rehabilitation, and Ghazaryan, inspired by this gesture, removed the hidden manuscripts from their secret hiding place. She donated them to the Charents Museum of Literature and Arts, ensuring the poet's legacy would live on.
In 2009, a memorial plaque was inaugurated on the house where Ghazaryan lived and worked from 1961 to 1999, a testament to her enduring legacy in Armenian art and literature. Today, Ghazaryan's paintings are exhibited in various museums of Armenia, including the National Gallery of Armenia, a poignant reminder of her contribution to preserving the country's cultural heritage.
