Acclaimed playwright and screenwriter behind iconic historical dramas, including the Academy Award-winning film "A Man for All Seasons".
Robert Bolt, a renowned English playwright and screenwriter, is best known for penning the screenplays for epic films like Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, and A Man for All Seasons, the latter two of which earned him two Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Born on August 15, 1924, in Sale, Cheshire, to Methodist parents, Bolt grew up in a family that owned a small furniture shop. His affinity for Sir Thomas More developed during his time at Manchester Grammar School. After leaving school at 16, Bolt worked in an insurance office before studying in the evening to pass three A-levels and attend the University of Manchester.
During World War II, Bolt served as a pilot officer candidate in the RAF, but airsickness prevented him from continuing past training. He then served as an Army officer in West Africa from 1943 to 1946. After the war, he returned to the University of Manchester, completing his honors degree in history in three years. Bolt then took a teaching diploma from the University of Exeter and taught English and history at Millfield School for many years.
It wasn't until Bolt was 33 that his play The Flowering Cherry was staged in London, starring Celia Johnson and Ralph Richardson. This marked the beginning of his full-time writing career, which would go on to include primarily dramatic works that placed their protagonists in tension with the prevailing society.
Bolt's writing often explored the tension between individual morality and societal expectations. His protagonists, such as Sir Thomas More and T.E. Lawrence, were complex characters who struggled with their own consciences in the face of overwhelming opposition.
Robert Bolt's screenplays have left an indelible mark on the film industry, influencing generations of writers and filmmakers. His work continues to be celebrated for its thought-provoking themes, complex characters, and epic scope.
Bolt passed away on February 20, 1995, leaving behind a legacy of iconic films and plays that continue to inspire audiences today.
