Hales' academic pursuits took him to the University of Utah, where he excelled in baseball, eventually earning a spot in some semiprofessional leagues. However, an arm injury forced him to reevaluate his athletic ambitions, leading him to join the Air Force ROTC unit at the university. After graduating with a bachelor's degree, Hales served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He later earned an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School in 1960.
