Theo Jrgensmann is a German jazz clarinetist renowned for his contributions to the European free jazz scene, and his innovative approach to solo clarinet performances. With a career spanning over three decades, Jrgensmann has established himself as one of the prominent figures in the clarinet renaissance of jazz and improvising music.
Born on September 29, 1948, Jrgensmann started playing the clarinet at the age of 18. He took private lessons from a music teacher at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen from 1969 to 1972. During this period, he worked with fellow musicians from the Ruhr industrial area and also held a job as a chemical laboratory assistant.
After a brief stint in the German Army, Jrgensmann dedicated himself to music full-time, becoming a professional musician in 1975. He led the group Clarinet Contrast from 1975 to 1977, which comprised only of clarinets, featuring musicians like Perry Robinson, Hans Kumpf, Bernd Konrad, and Michel Pilz.
In the late 1970s, Jrgensmann led one of West Germany's most well-known jazz groups, solidifying his position as a leading clarinetist in the European free jazz scene. He participated in the Clarinet Summit created by Joachim E. Berendt and himself, featuring John Carter, Perry Robinson, Gianluigi Trovesi, and others.
Jrgensmann has been involved in numerous international projects throughout his career. In 1985, he toured Europe with bassist Barre Phillips and reed player Paul McCandless. He was a member of Willem van Manen's Contraband (1985-1998), Andrea Centazzo's Mitteleuropa Orchestra (1983-1985), John Fischer's Interface (1981-1996), and Franz Koglmann's ensemble.
He has also worked with notable musicians such as Mike Richmond, Kent Carter, John Lindberg, Charlie Mariano, Wilber Morris, Eric Vloeimans, Jeanne Lee, Vincent Chancey, Kenny Wheeler, and Lee Konitz, demonstrating his versatility and adaptability as a clarinetist.
