Born on June 16, 1946, in Urbana, Illinois, Harrell's love affair with music began at the tender age of eight, when he first picked up the trumpet. His family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area when he was five, and it was here that he honed his skills, playing with local bands by the time he was 13.
After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in music composition in 1969, Harrell joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra, touring and recording with them throughout the year. This was just the beginning of his illustrious career, which would see him collaborate with some of the biggest names in jazz.
Despite struggling with schizophrenia from an early age, Harrell persevered, using music as a source of solace and inspiration. He played with the likes of Woody Herman, Azteca, and the Horace Silver Quintet, making five albums with the latter.
