During the German occupation of Estonia from 1942 to 1944, he served in the collaborationist paramilitary Omakaitse and later on the front as part of the Waffen-SS. After the German retreat in 1944, he continued his activities with the Forest Brothers, leading the local chapter of the Armed Combat Union Relvastatud Vitluse Liit in Soontaga.

Capture, Trial, and Execution

In midsummer 1949, the NKVD arrested Kaljurand, along with two members of his squad, while they were sleeping in the woods near the village of Vitra. After being wounded and captured, he was sentenced to death, along with Juhan Metsar and Arved Pill. The three were executed on March 13, 1951.
