Born on November 17, 1790, in Schulpforta, Electorate of Saxony, Möbius was descended on his mother's side from the renowned religious reformer Martin Luther. He was homeschooled until the age of 13, when he attended the college in Schulpforta in 1803, and studied there, graduating in 1809. Möbius then enrolled at the University of Leipzig, where he studied astronomy under the mathematician and astronomer Karl Mollweide.
In 1813, Möbius began to study astronomy under the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss at the University of Göttingen, while Gauss was the director of the Göttingen Observatory. From there, he went on to study with Carl Gauss's instructor, Johann Pfaff, at the University of Halle, where he completed his doctoral thesis The Occultation of Fixed Stars in 1815.
In 1816, Möbius was appointed as Extraordinary Professor to the chair of astronomy and higher mechanics at the University of Leipzig. Throughout his illustrious career, he made significant contributions to various fields, including projective geometry, where he introduced homogeneous coordinates, and the concept of the barycentric coordinate system.
Möbius's work has had a profound impact on modern mathematics, with many concepts and theorems bearing his name, such as the Möbius plane, the Möbius transformation, and the Möbius configuration. His pioneering work in projective geometry paved the way for future generations of mathematicians, including Felix Klein and Henri Poincaré.
A true visionary, Möbius, along with Arthur Cayley and Hermann Grassmann, was one of the few mathematicians who conceived of the possibility of geometry in more than three dimensions, long before Schläfli's discovery of the 4-polytopes in 1853.
