Carl Linnaeus the Younger was born on January 20, 1741, in Sweden. He was enrolled at the University of Uppsala at the tender age of 9, where he was taught science by his father's students, including Pehr Löfling, Daniel Solander, and Johan Peter Falk.
In 1763, at just 22 years old, Linnaeus the Younger succeeded his father as the head of Practical Medicine at Uppsala University, a position he held until his death. Although his promotion to professor was met with resentment among his colleagues, he went on to make significant contributions to the field of natural history.
His most notable work, the Supplementum Plantarum systematis vegetabilium, was published in 1781. This publication contained botanical descriptions by his father and colleagues, which he edited and added to. This work demonstrated his commitment to preserving and building upon his father's legacy.
Between 1781 and 1783, Linnaeus the Younger embarked on a two-year journey to England, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark. During this trip, he became ill with jaundice in London, and shortly after his return, he suffered from fever and a stroke, which ultimately led to his death at the age of 42.
Although Linnaeus the Younger's work was modest in comparison to his father's, he played a crucial role in preserving his father's extensive scientific collections. After his death, his mother, Sara Elisabeth, sold the library and herbarium to the English botanist Sir James Edward Smith. The collection was later sold to the Linnean Society of London, where it remains to this day.
